Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File

Uncategorized | Thursday May 31 2012 12:42 am | Comments Off

‘It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,’ guitarist says.

By Chris Harris

<P>On October 14, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/borgir_dimmu/artist.jhtml">Dimmu Borgir</a>Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be <a href="/news/articles/1593780/demi-lovato-metalhead-metal-file.jhtml">Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band</a> — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.</P><P>"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told <i>Metal File</i> last week, after <a href="/news/articles/1596201/this-moment-make-dream-reality-metal-file.jhtml">dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records</a>. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."</P><P>Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with
<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/moonspell/artist.jhtml">Moonspell</a>Moonspell, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/winds_of_plague/artist.jhtml">Winds of Plague</a>Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.</P><P>"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f–_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f— <i>is</i> this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."</P><P>Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled <i>In Sorte Diaboli.</i> "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.</P><P>"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."</P><P>While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.</P><P>"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."</P><P>Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/susperia/artist.jhtml">Susperia's</a>Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/vader/artist.jhtml">Vader</a>Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.</P><P>"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."</P><P>The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.</P><P>The rest of the week's metal news:</P><P>Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, <b>Winds of Plague</b>, have announced ex-<b>Azusa</b> drummer <b>Art Cruz</b> has joined their ranks — he replaced <b>Jeff Tenney</b>. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." …</P><P>What the world really needs is another
<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml"><b>Led Zeppelin</b></a><b>Led Zeppelin</b> box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the <i>Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD</i> box set. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. It’s not a party until someone gets “Punk’d,” right? That’s why MTV has lined up a special episode of its signature hidden-camera show as a lead-in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

The “Movie Awards Punk’d Pre-Party” will feature Kim Kardashian and Drake getting worked by Ashton Kutcher. The punking will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT this Sunday, June 3, on MTV and will be followed by the Movie Awards, hosted by Russell Brand, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

In between the “Punk’d” action, viewers will be taken to the Movie Awards red carpet, where actress, dancer and singer-songwriter Kat Graham will serve as Special Style Correspondent, working alongside MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, Jim Cantiello and Sway Calloway. The crew will wrangle the stars as they walk the carpet and hang out backstage, interviewing the likes of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, Chris Colfer, Chloë Grace Moretz and more.

“I’m excited to be collaborating with my friends at MTV for the Movie Awards,” Kat Graham shared. “I’m looking forward to being a part of bringing the show to the fun level it always arrives at. We’re going to be bringing fashion/fierce/pop to a show honoring amazing talent, and showing how we do it the MTV way!”

Also joining the fun on the red carpet and as presenters are the leads of “Snow White and the Huntsman”
: Kristen Stewart
, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. MTV has been all over “Snow White,” giving you an exclusive look at the movie as part of our Sneak Peak Week
.

Viewers will also be treated to never-before-seen footage from some of this summer’s hottest movies, including the first trailer for “Perks of Being a Wallflower” and an exclusive peek at “Katy Perry: Part of Me.” Stick around for a very special edition of MTV News’ “Afterhours” series, where Elizabeth Banks will star in a “Hunger Games” spoof. “Hunger Games” and “Bridesmaids” are the most-nominated films.

The Movie Awards will also feature exclusive footage from “The Dark Knight Rises,” with director/writer/producer Christopher Nolan and actors Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman on hand to celebrate the final chapter of the trilogy. Emma Stone is confirmed to receive the first-ever MTV Trailblazer Award during the telecast for carving out a unique and diverse Hollywood path through her varied and rich array of theatrical roles.

The Black Keys will be in the house to perform their hit single “Gold on the Ceiling,” Wiz Khalifa and Fun. will also take the stage, and MTV Push artist Martin Solveig will serve as house DJ, creating movie-music mash-ups that will remix some of film’s most-iconic theme scores, including “Star Wars,” “Jaws” and “Pulp Fiction.”

As a couch warm-up for the big show, MTV will present a weekend of marathons, including a special encore presentation of the first season of “Awkward,” which will air Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. ET/PT. You can also check out a full-season catch-up of “Punk’d,” starting Sunday at 3 p.m. ET/PT and leading right up to the “Pre-Party” special. Is ‘X Factor’ The Right Move For Britney Spears?

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 30 2012 3:07 am | Comments Off

Experts weigh in on whether Spears will find success with her new judging gig.

By Christina Garibaldi

<P><a href="/news/articles/1680782/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-offer.jhtml">The rumors had been swirling</a> for months, and now, according to reports, the pop princess herself, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>, will be joining the <a href="/news/articles/1684813/britney-spears-x-factor-judge.jhtml">judging panel on "The X Factor,"</a> landing a <a href="/news/articles/1684879/britney-spears-x-factor-deal-judge.jhtml">$15 million deal</a> for one season.</P><P>Yet, after 15 years in the public eye, seven studio albums and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, many are wondering: Is "The X Factor" the <a href="/news/articles/1680800/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-singing.jhtml">right career move for Spears</a>?</P><P>"I think it is a good move, actually," <a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/" target="_blank"><i>Entertainment Weekly</i></a> writer Tanner Stransky told MTV News. "I think she has so many people on her team watching what she's doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it's the right move right now."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Britney Spears' 'X Factor' Gig Could Breathe Light Into Her Career" id="vid:768409" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>This new role certainly has many advantages. It keeps Spears in the public eye while keeping her close to her family, and it will most likely bring in the big ratings that "X Factor" and Simon Cowell are hoping for. Yet there are some experts who are a little wary of Spears taking a spot on the panel, since over the years, the pop star has been noticeably withdrawn from press, rarely giving on-camera interviews.</P><P>"I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she's been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled," Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at <a href="http://www.billboard.com/" target="_blank"><i>Billboard,</i></a> said. "And there can be uncontrollable moments on 'The X Factor,' and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome."</P><P>Stransky agreed and believes that, while Spears is judging the contestants, viewers will ultimately be judging her.</P><P>"Everyone is going to take a close look at her and pay attention to what she says," Stransky said. "She's sort of been so managed on her interviews in the past five years, it's risky."</P><P>But Spears' loyal fanbase feels that putting Spears in an environment where anything can happen is actually a good thing, and will show a whole different side of the pop star.</P><P>"That's part of the excitement of her being on this: It's unscripted," said Jordan Miller, webmaster for Spears' biggest fan site, <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/" target="_blank">BreatheHeavy.com</a>. "We are so used to her reading cue cards and kind of being controlled in that way, so for her to break out of that and to do something that's stepping outside her comfort zone, I think it's a great step for her, career-wise, and for her as a person. I think she's going to do really good. I think she's confident."</P><P>And confidence is key when judging a singing competition, but so is experience — which Spears has in spades. For years, fans have listened to her chart-topping music and have seen her on tour, but now they're ready to connect with the star on a new level.</P><P>"I think the overall consensus is that people are really excited to see Britney do something new and be able to connect with her a couple times a week on national television," Miller said. "It's exciting for fans to see that she's going to be able to mentor these contestants, because like it or not, Britney does have the 'X Factor,' so it's going to be great to see how she can transcend this into more singers and inspire other people."</P><P><i>Are you excited for Britney Spears to be a judge on "The X Factor"? Let us know in the comments!</i></P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>

MTV News talks to ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ cast about Fox’s decision to enlist the two pop stars for the reality singing show.

By Jocelyn Vena

<P><b>NEW YORK</b> — As the fall TV season continues to make news, Fox has had the most buzz thanks to the <a href="/news/articles/1685004/demi-lovato-x-factor-judge.jhtml">news that Demi Lovato</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1684879/britney-spears-x-factor-deal-judge.jhtml">Britney Spears will sit down</a> beside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid as female judges on "The X Factor," replacing Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul.</P><P>On Monday (May 14), as talent from many of the network's leading shows lined up to talk to the press at the Fox event, what everyone really wanted to know was how these two artists might fit on the reality competition show.</P><P>Given that both have made names for themselves thanks to their own unique charms as pop stars, some of the more seasoned network vets offered up some sage advice for the reality show newbies. MTV News chatted with the folks of "So You Think You Can Dance," in the hours before the presentation where they were confirmed, to get their sage advice for Brit and Demi.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="'So You Think You Can Dance' Cast Weigh In On Britney Spears, Demi Lovato For 'X Factor'" id="vid:768829" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"You know, I don't have any advice for those ladies," "SYTYCD" host Cat Deeley explained. "What I do like about it though is they will be able to absolutely impart some serious wisdom. I love the idea that they've been in the business for so long and since being kids and so quite often they've had successes and they've had failures on things.</P><P>"And I think the most important thing is the mistakes we make," she added. "You learn so much from mistakes that you make and I think they'll be able to impart their wisdom to the new kids coming through. I think it's a great booking."</P><P>Judge Mary Murphy seemed excited by the chance to run into the girls at Fox-related events, and even shared that she'd love to see dancer Britney make an appearance on her show as well.</P><P>"So she would be a good [guest] too if she wanted to pop on over, but I think she's going to be a busy young woman with everything she has going on," she said. "I think we'll tune in to find out what the heck she's gonna say!" she said, going on to share some judging advice. "Just try to speak from the heart and you can't go wrong."</P><P>While Murphy and Deeley focused on the positive when it comes to their highly publicized judging spots, Nigel Lythgoe wondered if the singers (Britney, 30, and Demi, 19) might be too young for a mentor-type position.</P><P>"Well they've got to look on it as a brand-new show, to be frank. I don't think they need to look at the first season. I think they've got to be honest as they can be," he said of coming in for season two. "They're both artists and artists will always couch any criticism because they know that they've been criticized, so they've got to ignore that.</P><P>"They've got to be as honest as they can be with their contestants and just inspire them to be better," he said, before sharing his one hesitation about them.</P><P>"My only reservation is they're both young and I do think that mentors should be of an age," he added, joking he fears it might put older experts, like him, out of a job. "I do think mentors have had so much experience before they mentor. At the same time, both of these young ladies have had incredible personal experience and been through so much in their own lives that hopefully they can bring that to the party too. But at the end of the day, they are going to take newcomers and literally push them through a reality television competition. It's tough."</P><P><i>Do you think Demi Lovato and Britney Spears will make good judges on "The X Factor"? Leave your comment below!</i></p>

Site for Gaga’s fans is invite-only at this point.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> is already the queen of social media, almost 25 million Twitter followers. So it just goes to reason that once she's conquered that medium she would go on to create her own social networking site. <a href="www.littlemonsters.com" target="_blank">Little Monsters</a>, a site built around Gaga's fanbase, is in invite-only beta testing mode right now.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Finds Inspiration In Her Fans, And They Are Inspired By Her" id="vid:657588" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>According to <a href="http://mashable.com/2012/02/07/lady-gaga-social-network-little-monsters-launch/" target="_blank">Mashable</a>, an early look at the site shows some similarity to the popular Pinterest mobile app that allows users to drop pins on locations and things they like. It also uses elements of the Reddit site by allowing fans to rate cool content that they like.
Little Monsters will focus on fans sharing and creating photos and videos and allowing users to hype content that they are into. The site is the first one launched by Backplane, a tech startup co-founded by Gaga's manager, Troy Carter.</P><P>"Backplane is about bringing together communities and Gaga's community just so happens to be the community we're using to learn about proper functionality," CEO Matt Michelsen said about the company that will focus on building online communities. "We think we can really change the world."</P><P>Backplane is partially funded by Gaga and the company plans to launch Little Monsters out of beta at an undetermined time and spin off more sites this year. It hopes to leverage Gaga's massive online following to draw users to the new sites. To date, in addition to her massive Twitter base, Gaga has 330,000 followers on Google+, more than 50 million Facebook fans and more than <a href="/news/articles/1650720/lady-gaga-reaches-1-billion-youtube-views.jhtml">one billion views on YouTube</a>

How ‘Catching Fire’ Could Set Taylor Kitsch’s Career Ablaze

With ‘Battleship’ sinking at the box office, the role of Finnick Odair could serve as the actor’s life raft.

Forget those Robert Pattinson rumors. I have a winning first-round draft pick for Adonis-like District 4 tribute Finnick Odair: former “Friday Night Lights” star Taylor Kitsch.

To be sure, Kitsch’s name isn’t a new one in the frenzied speculation over who should play the “Catching Fire” hunk. For months, he’s been mentioned in the same breath as fan favorites like Armie Hammer and Garrett Hedlund, but with the less-than-stellar performance of “Battleship,” Kitsch needs one in the win column, and “The Hunger Games” sequel could be it.

When the MTV Movies staff sat down at the end of the year to compile our 2012 wish list, my deepest desire was to see the erstwhile Tim Riggins make good on the big screen. He’s had a couple opportunities so far, starting with Disney’s sci-fi adventure “John Carter.” The adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel reportedly cost the studio $350 million to produce, but opened to a disappointing $30.6 million domestically. Likewise, last weekend’s board-game-inspired actioner fell $15 million short of box-office experts’ modest $40 million projections.

Kitsch has one more 2012 film yet to bow — the Oliver Stone-directed “Savages” — but he needs a high-profile role in a box-office barnburner to really introduce him to the masses and secure a spot as a go-to leading man. Hence, Finnick Odair.

I’ll be the first to admit Kitsch doesn’t perfectly fit my mental image of the trident-wielding tribute; he isn’t blond, nor is he very tall (though have you seen him without a shirt on?). Abs aside, what matters more is that he’s able to effectively capture the essence of this surprisingly multifaceted character. Which, if you watched the dearly departed “Friday Night Lights,” you know Kitsch can do. After all, Finnick is really just the Tim Riggins of Panem. He’s clearly damaged yet still has the capacity to nurture and love — in other words, just two bad boys with big hearts.

After the first film’s boffo box office (returns are currently around the $400 million mark), the sequel’s success is basically a foregone conclusion. So, Taylor, as you ponder your next career step, why not take a look at the “Catching Fire” script (if you haven’t already) and see if you’re up for the arena? This could be the blazing hot role you’ve been looking for.

Do you think Taylor Kitsch would make a good Finnick? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

New ‘Breaking Dawn’ Posters Are Here!

Fans unlocked three new posters of Bella, Edward and Jacob after an Internet scavenger hunt.

“Twilight” fans received an early Christmas gift Thursday (May 24) in the form of three brand-new posters for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” Even better, the creative forces at Summit Entertainment released the posters through a scavenger hunt that required fans to visit their favorite fan sites.

Fans were tasked with finding clues within the text, which led to another web site with a scrambled word that had to be unscrambled in order to unlock the posters. Unsurprisingly, the dedicated and Internet-savvy fans were quick to acquire the “keys” to unlocking the posters.

Each poster features a close-up, artsy photo of one of the franchise’s three biggest stars: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. Pictured in character, they all stare fiercely into the camera. The only word on the posters is “Forever,” which seems to be a direct nod to the final words in Stephenie Meyer’s conclusion to her Twilight Saga.

Fans seem most delighted to see Bella’s new vampire eyes, which are almost blood-red in the pic, a nice contrast to the amber color of Edward’s eyes. Here is a collection of the expectedly ecstatic reactions on the official Twilight Facebook page:

“Love them!” commented fan Tweedy Sita Mahe. “And I love how they have their own poster. CAN WE HAVE A TRAILER NOW ? PLEASE !”

“So can’t wait to see the movie. It is going to be awesome,” wrote Lindsey Henderson. “Just wish we didn’t have to wait forever. 6 months ugh.”

“He’s sexier now that he’s married & a dad,” tweeted a dedicated Team Edward fan Cat Galeano. “DILF.”

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her ‘Crazy’ Led Zeppelin Covers

‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.</P><P>In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic — the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.</P><P>"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' — it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."</P><P>Blige also said she recorded another new song — a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" — for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.</P><P>"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

Beyonce Serenades Michelle Obama, Cements Comeback In Atlantic City

Queen B ascends her throne during the second in a four-night run of Memorial Day weekend shows.
By Rebecca Thomas

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — The “year of 4″ continues.

Four months after giving birth to her first child — an arrival announced last August at the MTV VMAsBeyoncé returned to the stage Saturday night, on the second of a four-night run in this East Coast resort city. And it was a spectacular fitting her rising icon status.

So what kinds of clues allude to near-icon status? Well, it’s in the details. For one, Revel, the sparkling, 6.3-million-square-foot beachfront destination that played host to Beyoncé’s comeback, devoted a channel on its guest-room flat-screen TVs solely to B-related content: no weather broadcasts, nary a “Housewife” and no commercial breaks; just videos, all-star performances and more, all through Memorial Day weekend. It was evident in the distance traveled, too, with fans telling MTV News they’d made cross-country pilgrimages, while still others came from as far as Tokyo and South Africa to hail the Queen B.

But those are just the hints, peripheral proof. The presence of First Lady Michelle Obama at last night’s concert left little doubt that the little girl from Houston who joined a girl group and then struck out on her own had seen another benchmark in her relatively young career. After exchanging letters in recent months, with each calling the other a role model for girls, Obama turned up in a sleeveless green sheath waving like royalty from a balcony in Ovation Hall.

A little after 10 p.m., as the pounding opening march from “End of Time” kicked in, Beyoncé appeared in silhouette; the sequins were hard to make out but the wind-blown mane was impossible to miss. Finally, B, stunning in hot pink heels and a beaded body suit, appeared on the massive stage backed by her dancers.

“Atlantic City, snap your fingers,” she commanded, launching into “Love on Top.” Without missing a step of the New Edition-inspired choreography, B powered through the song’s modulations in an extended vocal showcase. Then she took an exaggerated pause, as if to catch her breath (or to bask in the adulation?), before belting out a final coda. The 30-year-old’s comeback was officially under way.

Pushing through hits from her debut solo effort, including “Naughty Boy” and the dancehall-infused “Baby Boy,” and the Sasha Fierce smashes like “Diva,” B defied all post-partum laws as she kept pace with Frank Gatson’s acrobatic dance style. (“Y’all don’t know how hard I had to work. I had to lose 60 pounds!” she laughed to the crowd later. “They had me eating lettuce.”) And just as songs like “Single Ladies” and “Run the World (Girls)” are meant to serve as empowerment manuals for women, it became clear last night that Beyoncé’s choreography is meant to do the same: a series of sensual quickstep moves that revolve around the hips and legs. It showed in the Fosse-style swing and formations on songs like “Get Me Bodied,” and the strut-heavy footwork on “Freakum Dress.”

“Sasha Fierce disappeared, but y’all bringing her back,” B joked midway through the euphoric two-hour set.

For one of our favorite numbers, “Party,” the 4 singer donned full-on showgirl regalia in a heady rendition that saw confetti coming from the roof and dice-shaped beach balls being tossed through the crowd as dancers in large feathered headdresses magically turned up in the aisles.

There were ballads, of course, at Ovation Hall, the more memorable among them a tribute to Whitney Houston and a cover of Lauryn Hill’s classic “Ex Factor.” And if Beyoncé reminded us of what we’ve lost in those gut-wrenching covers — she proved, too, that she’s more than ready to carry the weight on her shoulders.

Drake’s Says His Critics ‘Let Me Know That I’m Relevant’

Uncategorized | Sunday May 27 2012 12:49 am | Comments Off

‘It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,’ Drake tells MTV News of how he deals with constant criticism.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Drake understands that no artist is above criticism. So it’s not that Drizzy doesn’t hear his detractors, he just chooses to ignore them. At least that’s what he told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during a May 17 Club Paradise tour stop in Houston, Texas. “There will be days when I walk in an arena and people will cheer and then there might be days when I walk in an arena and people might boo, but it all sounds the same to me because it’s all just noise that lets me know that I’m relevant,” Drake said, sharing some words of wisdom that was given to him by boxing champ Floyd Mayweather.

“I don’t get booed,” Drizzy continued. “I don’t face that. I mean he faces that challenge but my challenge is more with social media and open opinions and people just feeling like they need to talk.”

Drake’s music, and just about his every move, is dissected through the media as well as on Twitter and blogs. The fact that he sings as well as raps has made him a target for those looking to take away his hip-hop cred. Still, the “Headlines” MC remains one of rap’s most successful draws today.

Common called him out the OVO general on “Sweet,” a single from his 2011 album The Dreamer/The Believer. Many also believe that G.O.O.D Music’s Pusha T has also been throwing subliminal jabs at Drake, first on last year’s “Don’t F–k With Me” freestyle, then on his “Sweet” freestyle. Pusha has gone on record saying that he wasn’t dissing Drake and he actually likes the Toronto MC’s music, but after Push dropped his new single “Exodus 23:1,” speculation began to swirl that he was again taking aim and Drake and his mentor Lil Wayne. Weezy responded with a poignant tweet: “F— pusha t and anybody that love em.”

It is important to note that when he sat with Sway, Drake did not address Pusha T or any other rappers directly, but he did speak about his detractors in a very general sense. “It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,” he said sternly. “I love the music I make and the videos I make and the people I associate with and every decision I’ve ever made.”

For Drake, taking the stage on each stop of his Club Paradise Tour is all the assurance that he needs. “Just to let [fans] know that I don’t care about anything else outside of this right here,” he said from backstage at Houston’s Toyota Center, referencing the army of fans waiting for him to perform. “That other stuff, hiding behind computers and yip-yapping all day on radio stations, it’s like that’s cool, man, for points and popularity, but at the end of the day, there is still 15,000 people here.”

‘Men In Black’ Star Will Smith’s Energy Needs To Be ‘Harnessed’

‘While I’d be turned here directing Josh Brolin, Will Smith would be punching me in my kidneys,’ ‘MIB3′ director Barry Sonnenfeld says.

No matter what you love most about the “Men in Black” franchise, the most compelling aspect of the sci-fi/action films — despite all their otherworldly and impressive visual effects — is the charm of their star and all-around likable actor Will Smith as Agent J. The former “Fresh Prince” is known for being a ball of excitable, positive energy on set, but according to “Men in Black 3″ director Barry Sonnenfeld, sometimes that energy can get a little dangerous.

“Usually, while I’d be turned here directing Josh Brolin, Will Smith would be punching me in my kidneys,” he told MTV News recently. “In fact, at the end of this movie, I went into the hospital because Will had torn my rotator cuff. On ‘Wild Wild West’ he broke my hand in five places, so Will’s gotta have his energy harnessed a little bit, at least when he’s working with me. I don’t think he ever went around punching Michael Mann [who directed Smith in 2001's 'Ali'], let me just say that.”

We then asked Sonnenfeld if there were any repercussions for Smith with all this on-set abuse.

“I told him that if he didn’t stop hitting me that I would direct ‘Men in Black 4′ and hire his son to play young Agent J,” Sonnenfeld joked. “So maybe that will make him calm down a little bit.”

It should also be known that Smith’s acting skills were a little rusty when he arrived on set to begin work on “MIB 3,” which required some lighthearted finessing from Sonnenfeld and extra practice from Smith.

“On the first day of photography, we filmed Will on a blue-screen stage having to jump down [from the top of the Chrysler building], and what was great about it was that he hadn’t acted in three years and was really bad,” Sonnenfeld recalled of one of his favorite moments during filming. “Luckily, we cut out the bad stuff, but that first take we did after he hadn’t acted in three years, I was sweating because he was no good. After I yelled, ‘Cut!’ Will said, ‘Baz, I can do better! I’m really terrible. I haven’t acted in three years, I’m really rusty!’ And within a day or two, it all worked out fine. But man, it was interesting. You know how they say ‘Once you learn how to ride a bicycle, you never forget?’ Well, Will forgot how to act for the first day or two. Luckily he wasn’t acting with other actors or it would have been really embarrassing.”

Etan Patz Case: Pedro Hernandez Arrested For Murder

Uncategorized | Friday May 25 2012 12:33 pm | Comments Off

Pedro Hernandez confessed to murdering Etan Patz yesterday, meaning that after more than three decades, the famous missing persons case may be over.

Hernandez, a former corner store worker, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder after he confessed to strangling 6-year-old Patz in 1979.

“He was remorseful, and I think the detectives thought it was a feeling of relief on his part,” New York police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the media.

Incredibly, today, May 25 marks the 33rd anniversary of the disappearance of Etan Patz, who became the nation’s first “milk carton child.”

Etan Patz Case: Pedro Hernandez Arrested

The case sparked the movement to raise awareness of missing kids.

Etan vanished on his way to a New York bus stop, triggering a massive manhunt, but no sign of the little boy had ever been detected.

The Etan Patz case returned to the headlines last month when authorities re-launched the search, tearing up the basement of a nearby building.

Kelly said a recent tip led investigators to Hernandez, 51, a Maple Shade, N.J., resident with a teenage daughter. The commissioner said:

“In the years following Etan’s disappearance, Hernandez had told his family that he had ‘done a bad thing’ and killed a child in New York.”

On Wednesday night, Hernandez was questioned in New Jersey and then voluntarily returned with detectives to New York, says Kelly.

“He brought them to the scene of the crime, which is now a store that sells eye glasses,” says the commissioner.

“Hernandez described to the detectives how he lured young Etan from the school bus stop at West Broadway and Prince Street with the promise of a soda.”

“He then led him into the basement of the (store), choked him there, and disposed of the body by putting it into a plastic bag, and placing it into the trash.”

At the time, Hernandez was a 19-year-old stock clerk in the business and lived in an apartment nearby, says Kelly.

Kelly said investigators arrested Hernandez based on “the fact that he had told his story in the past, and the specificity of what he said in the confession.”

Hopefully, as horrible as this is, the family can finally have closure.
